Last Newsletter of the season
We'll take a break from Newsletters over the summer. In doing so, I want to take the opportunity to thank everyone for their hard work over the year. We live in interesting times, both within the university and outside the University. As a consequence there are possibly many changes that may happen. The School is a good place with lots of people working hard to make it that good place; together we wil keep it so. Do enjoy what remains of the summer.

Windows
There have been significant delays in the Kilburn window replacements. Many people have been out of their offices for a considerable length of time, with more people having to leave their offices with none having been completed. The contractors are encountering unforseen problems and thus offices are having their window replacements started, but not finished. I am assured that this is beginning to change and offices are coming bakc into use this week, even if they are not wholly finished. Do try and bear with it; Tony McDonald and co are trying hard to make it work and some metaphorical table thumping has taken place. We aim to get a revised schedule out very soon.Do you need a mentor?
We are extending our current mentoring scheme (which is run for academic staff on probation) to all academic staff: if you need advice regarding your professional development, research, teaching, planning, etc. but don’t know whom to ask for support or guidance, this may be for you! If you want to know more about this, please email me at uli.sattler@manchester.ac.uk and we can have a chat about this.

ResLife Advisor vacancies
ResLife are currently recruiting to further vacancies for ResLife Advisors beginning in September 2017 – the ResLife Advisor teams provide an important source of guidance and support for students, and these roles are a great way to get involved in improving the living experience for students in our halls of residence. Single person accommodation is provided to RLAs at no charge.
Applications are welcome from members of staff and postgraduate students. Further information on the role and the recruitment process can be found here. The deadline for applications to these posts is midnight 13th August.

School Research Newsletter out now!
The summer edition of the School's Research Newsletter is out now! This is the 10th edition so I'd like to take the opportunity to thank everyone who has contributed content since its inception 3 years ago.
The newsletter is used to show visitors the kind of work that takes place in CS. We use it for industrial visitors, funders e.g. EPSRC visits, Industry Club, PGR Open Days. Hard copies are available outside KB2.7 and will soon be available online through www.cs.manchester.ac.uk/our-research/news/

Eva Navarro Lopez now IEEE Senior Member
Congratulations to Eva Navarro Lopez, who is one of the four nominees to represent the University of Manchester in the `Workshop on the Future of Control in the UK' organised by the UK Automatic Control Council in cooperation with the EPSRC. The meeting takes place in London on the 14th of September 2017. This meeting aims to define the future directions of control in the UK, with a clear goal of influencing the EPSRC.
Eva has been recently elevated to the grade of IEEE Senior member for her significant contributions to the profession of control and engineering.

The Music of Proof: What does Maths sound like?

As part of Manchester Science Festival the RNCM are holding an event The Music of Proof: What does Maths sound like? taking place at the RNCM. This is the launch event for PRiSM, the RNCM Centre for Practice & Research in Science & Music, dedicated to exploring creative collaborations between the sciences and music.
The event is led by mathematician Marcus du Sautoy (Co-Director PRiSM; Simonyi Professor for the Public Understanding of Science and Professor of Mathematics, University of Oxford), Rowan Hooper (Managing Editor, New Scientist), Dr Michelle Phillips (RNCM), Professor David De Roure (Oxford e-Research Centre) and RNCM Musicians.

RAEng Ingenious public engagement awards

The Ingenious awards programme aims to:
- Inspire creative public engagement with engineering projects
- Motivate engineers to share their stories, passion and expertise with wider audiences and develop their communication and engagement skills
- Raise awareness of the diversity, nature and impact of engineering amongst people of all ages and backgrounds
- Provide opportunities for engineers to engage with members of the public from groups currently underrepresented in engineering
Funding is available from £3-30k
We prioritise projects that reach diverse and underrepresented audiences including communities in the top 25% most deprived neighbourhoods in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland and that engage with engineers and publics of different genders, ages and ethnic backgrounds.
DE NetworkPlus Call for Proposals

The Digital Economy (DE) Theme is looking to support up to 5 'NetworkPlus' grants to stimulate development of DE research and communities within key emerging areas of national importance for DE research. These networks will bring together relevant parts of the interdisciplinary DE communities and a variety of stakeholders, to identify the key research opportunities, build collaborations and grow the area of research for the benefit of the UK. The NetworkPluses will undertake a variety of activities including workshops, events, feasibility studies, secondments or horizon scanning. Applicants are encouraged to tailor their activities to the needs of the area and to be innovative in their approach.It's important to read the DE NetworkPlus Community Event report and FAQs available on the webpages. Attendance at the event was not compulsory for making an application.
2017 ERC Advanced Grants - page limits
Deadline: 31 Aug 2017

References listed as footnotes in ERC proposals will count towards the page limit for the proposal, however, listing references at the end of each of the B1 and B2 sections will not count towards the page limit. In some cases this will free up considerable space in the proposal if the footnotes are lengthy. However, only the references can run on to extra pages.
PIs for this prestigious Grant are expected to have a track record of significant research achievements in the last 10 years.
Lister Institute of Preventive Medicine Research Prizes
Deadline: 03 Nov 2017
The Lister Institute of Preventive Medicine supports biomedical and related research, now invites applications from outstanding researchers for its 2018 Research Prizes (£200k over 5 yrs). Candidates must have between 3-10 yrs post-doctoral experience on 1 October 2018 and must have guaranteed employment for the first 3 years of the notional five years of the award.
