Appointment of André van Schaik to The Furber Chair in Computer Systems Engineering

I am very pleased to announce the appointment of André van Schaik to The Furber Chair in Computer Systems Engineering. André received his M.Sc. degree in electrical engineering from the University of Twente, Enschede, The Netherlands, in 1990 and his Ph.D. in electrical engineering from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (EPFL), Lausanne, Switzerland, in 1998. Later in 1998 he was a postdoctoral research fellow in the Department of Physiology at the University of Sydney, funded by a fellowship from the Garnett Passe and Rodney Williams memorial foundation. In 1999 he became a Senior Lecturer in the School of Electrical and Information Engineering at the University of Sydney and promoted to Reader in 2004. In 2011 he became a research professor at Western Sydney University and leader of the Biomedical Engineering and Neuromorphic Systems (BENS) Research Program in the MARCS Institute for Brain, Behaviour, and development. In 2018, he became the Director of the International Centre of Neuromorphic Engineering. His research focuses on neuromorphic engineering and computational neuroscience.

André has authored more than 300 publications (more details), has been awarded more than 35 patents, and is a founder of four start-up companies: VAST Audio, Personal Audio, Heard Systems, and Optera Solutions. André will be joining us in April 2025 and I am sure you will all make him feel very welcome.

    Congratulations to Marie Farrell

SoE Summer Internships - Call for Project Proposals

The School of Engineering Undergraduate Summer Internship scheme will run again this summer. Please could any colleagues interested in offering an internship complete the proposal form. The deadline to submit your proposal is 5pm on Friday 24th January 2025. Please note that proposals will be accepted on a first come first served basis, so if you are interested do not hesitate to apply.

Funding is provided for 180 hours per internship, equivalent to 6 weeks at 30 hours per week, at an hourly rate of £12.86. Internships must start no earlier than 9th June 2025 and finish no later than 21st September 2025, but the precise days/weeks worked are to be agreed between you and the appointed student. If there are specific dates that are non-negotiable, please state this in your proposal. All projects should last the full 180 hours but no longer.

As was the case last year, our team (Information, Advice and Guidance, IAG) will shortlist the applications, so please ensure that your criteria are clearly set out in your project proposal form. Some best practice examples of internship listings from previous years are attached to this email, please refer to them if you’re unsure about any of the sections of the form or how it will be laid out on the CareerConnect page.

If you wish, you can submit more than one project proposal, though in the case that we receive more proposals than spaces we may ask you to select your first-choice proposal so that others can also run internships.

The final deadline for submission of your proposals is 5pm Friday 24th January 2025. Submissions after this time will not be reviewed.

Process Highlight - Casual Appointment Process

We’re introducing a new part to the Newsletter, and will be regularly highlighting a process we support in the CSOps team, and some best practices along the way.

To start with, we are looking at hiring casual members of staff. In order to do this, we recommend looking at the School Sharepoint site here for the most up to date guidance.  The University Casual appointments policy is here

    • Please leave ample time to begin the process of recruiting your casual. This can take 3-4 weeks from the point of request to confirmation of appointment. Please do not send in a request and expect that your casual will be able to begin work in the next 2 weeks.
    • Please ensure that the CAS1 is filled out correctly with no missing information – it is especially important that there is a detailed job description as this ensures that the rate of pay matches the job title - if you need help to confirm the appropriate rate of pay then please ask CSOps.
    • RTW check: It is a UKVI requirement that any casual completes a RTW check before they begin work.  If you believe that your casual already has a RTW in place (e.g. due to being a TA or having previously been a casual) this must first be confirmed by CS Ops before they can begin work.  Please do not let any casual complete any work before contacting CSOps to set them up.
    • Timesheets must be completed and approved for every week of work.  Please ensure all approved timesheets are sent in a weekly format and by the end of the 1st week of every month

If you have any questions about the process, please get in touch at CSOps

Information is also available on the RS Sharepoint site.

UKRI has announced Round 10 of the UKRI Future Leaders Fellowships scheme – details here

The UKRI deadline for applications is Wednesday 18th June 2025. This a one stage process with no outline stage, but institutions are limited to a specific quota of applications, necessitating a cross-university triage process. The University of Manchester have been given the maximum allocation of 10 applications.

We are keen to encourage applications from the widest range of backgrounds, perspectives and experiences possible to ensure all talented applicants have an equitable chance to succeed as per the assessment criteria. We will follow the same transparent and consistent process across all faculties in keeping with the funder’s guidance on Equality, Diversity and Inclusion.

Each Faculty will hold online information sessions for potential applicants in mid January. Applicants should email their faculty contact (listed at the end of this announcement) to be notified when they are announced. Details will also be shared on the Researcher Development website.

    INTERNAL REVIEW PROCESS

    1.      Applicants are asked to submit Expressions of Interest (EoIs) (template attached) to their relevant faculty contact by 16:00 on Friday 7th February 2024. Please note, this now includes a short Resume for Research and Innovation (R4RI) rather than a traditional CV.

    2.      EoIs will be sent to expert reviewers. They will provide comments to a Faculty panel, who will rank the applications.

    3.      The top four applications from each Faculty will be submitted to a central sift panel, chaired by the Vice President for Research, to decide which applicants fill the University’s quota of 10 applications to UKRI.

    4.      Decisions will be communicated to applicants on 24th March.

The ten applicants whose EoIS are selected to be taken forward will then be supported to develop full applications. They should liaise with their Research Services hubs to organise costing and submission on The Funding Service.

After feedback from previous rounds, we are mindful that research projects may span two faculties. Applicants who are in this position should make one submission and request that their bid be considered by more than one panel, explaining in one or two sentences by email why this is appropriate.

EoI queries should be directed to the relevant Faculty contact in the first instance: Faculty of Science and Engineering (FSE) – Daniel Twiddy (daniel.twiddy@manchester.ac.uk)
