Important information for all line managers on induction resources for the Faculty.

A School Operations Community of Practice (CoP) led by Denise Grehan and Lucy Adams who are Deputy School Operations Managers in CEAS and Physics identified how to deliver inductions across the Faculty and Departments have developed Induction Resources.

    Manager's portal

    - This portal contains all the vital information managers need to complete an effective induction.

A “Working in FSE” portal for new starters

    - The new starter induction site provides a wealth of information about the Faculty and its structure as well as comprehensive details of training requirements, setting up IT and health and safety requirements specifically related to FSE and our buildings. Wellbeing, social responsibility, learning and development and a handy ‘jargon buster’ page that helps new starters understand some of the acronyms the University uses Access to these portals/resources is now available on the Faculty Employee Engagement and Induction page:

    Manager’s resources: https://www.staffnet.manchester.ac.uk/fse/faculty-support-services/human-resources/manager-induction/

    New Starter resources: https://www.training.itservices.manchester.ac.uk/public/SLD/FSE/content/#/

As a line manager can we please ask that you use the manager resources when preparing and completing inductions. Please also share the new starter’s platform with all your new starters.

Denise and Lucy will be continuing to develop these platforms so please send them any feedback so we can ensure the resources remain useful for line managers and a reliable resource. We also welcome feedback about induction more widely as we continue our work in this area.

Defence and Security Accelerator (DASA) Engagement Event

    Event: Fri, 14-May-2021, 12:30 – 13:30
    Registration required

    Speaker: Jonathan Jones
Short bio: Jonathan has over 25 years of experience in the Defence sector, including service with the RAF as well as extensive private sector experience within blue chip companies such as BAE Systems and Microsoft. Jonathan will explain opportunities with the Defence and Security Accelerator, how to engage, and how to submit proposals. He is based in the North West and is keen to establish strong links with NW innovators.

    Background on DASA:
The Defence and Security Accelerator (DASA) is an innovation hub for government, helping industry and academia turn ideas into innovative equipment and services for national security in order to help maintain security and to build prosperity for the UK. DASA accelerates innovation by identifying and funding the most novel and desirable ideas from industry and academia. In the past year, they have supported some 245 proposals to help accelerate development of innovative products and ideas, run 15 competitions, and invested £42.8 million with innovators across industry & academia. These include, but aren’t limited to, such areas as reducing risk of life, removing personnel from the most dangerous and deadly scenarios, increased automation, speeding up delivery of supplies to the remotest of places in the toughest of conditions, lowering the mental burden on individuals, and harnessing the power of Artificial Intelligence and data to enhance evidence-led responses. It’s a broad remit that welcomes interaction with Academics across a number of disciplines.

Horizon Europe Passes in European Parliament - What Next?

Details of the legal basis of Horizon Europe (previously H2020) EC projects - very briefly there are no changes in our ability to apply for funding.

The European Parliament has adopted the legal basis of Horizon Europe. MEPs voted overwhelmingly in favour of both the Horizon Europe Regulation and the Specific Programme on Tuesday night.  This paves the way for the final adoption and publication of the legislation - followed by the publication of the first Horizon Europe Work Programme with calls for proposals, budgets and deadlines.

Following the Parliament's consent, the Specific Programme for Horizon Europe and the Euratom Regulation will now need to be adopted by the Council of Ministers within the next two weeks.  The Horizon Europe Regulation, the Specific Programme and the Euratom Regulation are then expected to be published in the Official Journal of the EU on 12 May and become law, allowing for the first Horizon Europe Work Programme to be published once the drafting process is completed. The Regulation will apply retroactively from 1 January 2021, thus covering the early Horizon Europe calls launched so far.

Please note, that to a further delay in the drafting process the main Work Programme will not be published on the same day the programme's legal basis enters into force - its publication and launch of the first calls is now expected to take place in late May, with the possibility that some of the first deadlines may need to be adjusted accordingly.

The Parliament's approval of Horizon Europe also brings the formal UK association process a step closer to completion, as explained here.

Calls will be issued via the Participant Portal as for Horizon 2020, the University’s Participant Identification Code (PIC) remains the same as for Horizon 2020, you do not need to apply for a separate/new PIC when setting up a new proposal session - the University’s PIC is – 999903840.

If you have any questions about Horizon Europe participation please email liz.fay@manchester.ac.uk

Open for Research Proposals: Greater Manchester Care Record Research Platform

As part of the Covid-19 pandemic response, Greater Manchester (Health Innovation Manchester, Greater Manchester Health and Social Care Partners and stakeholders) have deployed a single shared care record for all Greater Manchester’s 2.8m citizens: the GM Care Record. Patient-level data is integrated from across GM health and care organisations into a combined platform and includes data feeds from primary, secondary and some tertiary services.

These data are now available for research via a secure platform where authorised researchers can access subsets of the GM Care Record database for specified studies.

Presently, applications are restricted to Greater Manchester University researchers, and to studies that consider the direct or indirect consequences of Covid-19. Plans are underway to extend the scope and scale of the service in the future.
For information on live studies using the GMCR: https://healthinnovationmanchester.com/thegmcarerecord/the-gm-care-record-for-secondary-uses-research/live-gmcr-research/

Applications to use the platform for research are welcomed. For guidance on how to apply and the data available see: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1Pp9Z3yGq259m9fGXwZfWNI40HJ-oqMKL/view

    -        How will the NetworkPlus add to existing research, networks or other activities, and how will it connect with on-going research in the UK?
    -        What activities will the NetworkPlus conduct in order to achieve its objectives?
    •      Interdisciplinarity:
    -        What areas of UoM expertise will be involved, and how will they add value to the activities of the Network?
    -        How will you ensure the Network will have a multi-disciplinary, cross-sectoral impact?
