On Campus teaching
I'm sure you will have seen that we'll stay in the Department for Education Tier three that determines the mode of teaching delivery. This means that only on campus teaching that is necessary for accreditation or cannot be otherwise delivered on-line will continue. For Computer Science this means that we can expect to continue to do all our teaching on-line. The next review date is 11 November.

Department Meeting
The next Department Forum isn't until January, which is a good while away. As there is quite a lot going on at the moment we will hold a one hour long Department meeting at 3 p.m. on Wednesday 11 November. We will do some brief updates and then do a question and answer session. If you feel moved to supply a question in advance, which can be useful if we need to find something out, then send the question to Mel Price (Melanie.Price@Manchester.ac.uk).

Information Security & Data Protection online training
The new Information Security & Data Protection course (launched in June 2020) is hosted online by Metacompliance. It replaces the Data Protection course (TBF26) on Blackboard. It is mandatory for University of Manchester employees and must be completed by everyone by 31 December 2020 regardless of when you last did your data protection training. The training introduces some new information security content, refreshes people’s understanding of data protection law and provides a reminder about Freedom of Information legislation.

Academic Support Office (ACSO) - procurements requests
We are currently experiencing a large volume of small value spending and in line with the University’s approval process, the whole process can take some time to facilitate. Therefore can I please ask that you give as much notice as possible for any procurement requests. The team have lost a number of staff over the past few months so we are working really hard to provide the level of service that you are used to.
Can I also remind you that you need to seek approval before submitting any expense claims. Please do not assume that all expense claims will be approved as approval is required before any spend.
Thank you
Michelle Fox

Improving access and participation for black, Asian and minority ethnic groups in PGR
Expressions of Interest Required for OfS/RE call on ‘Improving access and participation for black, Asian and minority ethnic groups in postgraduate research’
Deadline: 16 Nov 2020
The Office for Students (OfS) and Research England (RE) have recently announced a joint funding call for project proposals which will ‘Improve access and participation for black, Asian and minority ethnic groups in postgraduate research’.
As the call guidance states that institutions are only permitted to lead on one application and be a partner in up to three others, Manchester Doctoral College Strategy Group (MDCSG) will work with the Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) team to co-ordinate the University’s submissions to this call.
All colleagues considering submitting an application to this call, either as a lead or as partner please contact sarah.chatwin@manchester.ac.uk asap for the expression of interest form (maximum one page) and email it to claire.faichnie@manchester.ac.uk by 5pm on Monday 16 November.
This will enable us to select the lead bid and identify opportunities for colleagues to work together.
Colleagues from MDCSG and the EDI team will review all expressions of interest and applicants will be informed of the outcome of this review no later than Monday 23 November.
Discipline hopping in ICT
Deadline: rolling
https://epsrc.ukri.org/funding/calls/disciplinehopping07/The EPSRC's Information and technologies (ICT) team would like to encourage researchers to pursue an immersive experience in other disciplines and user environments (3-24 months).
Discipline Hopping Awards will provide short-term support to allow researchers from core ICT fields to explore research collaboration in other disciplines and/or user fields. The aim of this is to foster new interactions, bringing a multidisciplinary and user-driven focus to research. Alternatively, non ICT specialists can apply for funds to bring a technological perspective to their home discipline.
The call is aimed at researchers who have a proven track record of research in their home discipline, providing funding to develop skills and collaborations with other disciplines and end users. The researcher is expected to immerse themselves in the discipline they are hopping into and a move of location or department would normally be expected for this time (this may not be possible under current circumstances).
EPSRC may signpost specific research areas for discipline hopping from time to time.
