School of Computer Science BCS accreditation 2021 - 2026

Computer Science (Human Computer Interaction) wIE MEng (Hons) - BIOL10832 Excitable Cells

Return to programme overview.

2.1.1 Knowledge and understanding of facts, concepts, principles & theories

To consider the major concepts underlying the basis of cell excitability, the structure and function of excitable cells and their contribution to muscle and nervous system function.

Assesement : Examination, Individual coursework, Group coursework

2.1.2 Use of such knowledge in modelling and design

As applied to Artificial intelligence and Machine Learning

Assesement : Examination, Individual coursework

2.3.2 Development of general transferable skills

Exam and online assessments involve numeric literacy (working with equations and graphs).

Assesement : Examination, Online summative assessments.

3.1.3 Knowledge of systems architecture

Understand the gross organization of the nervous system.

Assesement : Examination, Individual coursework

3.1.4 Knowledge and understanding of mathematical and/or statistical principles

See 4.1.2 (I'm unclear on the difference between these two)

Assesement : See 4.1.2 (I'm unclear on the difference between these two)

4.1.1 Knowledge and understanding of scientific and engineering principles

Develop an understanding of what excitable cells are and what makes them important. Key features of how excitable cells maintain and alter their ionic composition in relation to electrochemical gradients will become familiar.

Assesement : Individual coursework

4.1.2 Knowledge and understanding of mathematical principles

Application of the Nernst and Goldman-Hodgkin-Katz equations to calculate membrane potentials (https://softchalkcloud.com/lesson/serve/WgDebMZClLdOsK/html),

Assesement : Online individual summative assessments (these form 10% of unit). Online individual formative assessments.

4.2.3 Principles of appropriate supporting engineering and scientific disciplines

Students will understand the techniques used to study excitable cells; in addition, students will become familiar with a variety of cells within the nervous system and how they function, such as sensory and motor neurons and how these relate to muscles

Assesement : Examination, Individual coursework
