2.1.1 Knowledge and understanding of facts, concepts, principles & theories

The unit builds students' knowledge and deep understanding of research-level issues in cognitive robotics and the latest machine learning approaches (e.g. deep learning).

2.1.2 Use of such knowledge in modelling and design

Students learn to design and carry out a deep learning simulation study, to practice the use of the theoretical knowledge to a practical implementation problem.

Students learn to select, justify and apply AI and machine learning algorithms to specific robotics problems.

2.1.5 Deploy theory in design, implementation and evaluation of systems

Students learn to use a set of libraries and tools to implement the selected machine learning methods.

2.1.6 Recognise legal, social, ethical & professional issues

There is a lecture on ethics of AI and robotics, the students explicitly learn about AI-related ethics issues.

2.1.8 Knowledge of management techniques to achieve objectives

The labs and coursework requires the practice and development of project planning and monitoring skills.

2.2.1 Specify, design or construct computer-based systems

Students use libraries and dataset to build and test an AI (visual recognition and classification) system.

2.2.2 Evaluate systems in terms of quality and trade-offs

Lectures and exams focus on evaluation and selection of different methods and algorithms,

2.2.4 Deploy tools effectively

The coursework report is an opportunity to reflect and evaluate the use of AI and robot vision tools.

3.1.4 Knowledge and understanding of mathematical and/or statistical principles

The machine learning component requires the consideration of the underlying maths models.
