from Head of School
Careers Fair Last
week the School held a Careers Fair which was a huge success with over 20
companies looking for the best Computer Science graduates. Thanks to Duncan
Hull and Mabel Yau for organising the day.
Annual
Research Symposium The Annual Research Symposium will be next week, Tuesday
28th – Thursday 30th October. The Keynote talk will be by
Stephen Brewster, Professor of
Human-Computer Interaction in the Department of Computing Science at the
University of Glasgow, at 12:00 on Thursday with the prize giving and poster
session to follow. The full agenda can

All sessions are open to all staff and research
students, please feel free to attend some and see the breadth of great
research that our PhD students are doing. New Support
System Chris Page and Paul Waring
have developed a system that provides a different way to request support
across a variety of different areas, including environment, IT infrastructure
and the various other systems and areas in the school. It doesn't replace
previous mechanisms (e.g. you can still mail environs@ or raise a ticket via
Remedy) or provide any additional support but provides a single point of

EPS Pensions Chat Room 21 Oct 14 A chance to discuss pension matters
face-to-face with a member of the Pensions Office on: 21 October (12 to 14:00) in Niels Bohr Common Room, Schuster Building Is there a question you have always to ask about your current or
previous pension? Whichever pension scheme you belong to (i.e. USS, UMSS, NHSPS or
GMPF), you are invited to drop in at the EPS Pensions Chat Room on one of the
above dates to talk to one of our pensions colleagues. They can provide you with answers to all sorts of generic questions or
tell you how to access information about our pension schemes, e.g.: · I’d like to save
more toward my pension: how to do I go about it? · I’ve got a
pension from another employer, what can I do with this? · What would my
family receive if I died in service? · When can I
retire? · How can I find
out how much my pension is worth? · I don’t belong
to a pension scheme: should I join one? As well as having a chance to meet the Pensions team and put faces to
names, you’ll be able to pick up a range of pensions scheme literature. No
appointment is needed. Please note that the team will not be able to offer more personal,
detailed advice at these sessions; if this is what you need please make an

for Computer Science Research 23

describe opportunities for research funding in computer science resulting
from calls in Cyber-Physical Systems by the EU (due October 2014) and from
EPSRC/DSTL in the UK (network currently being proposed). Cyber-Physical
systems (CPS) involve the integration of digital and physical components, and
are well advanced in automobile and aviation design (e.g. automatically driven
vehicles). Recently, interest has moved to a wider approach with multiple
Cyber-Physical systems interacting, for example in integrated systems for
transport, healthcare, electricity and water networks. This brings many
challenges of interest to computer science in terms of systems theory, data
interoperability, multi-scale modelling, co-design of hardware and software,
distributed systems, sensor networks, formal methods, HCI. The focus of
the talk is to develop a discussion that can identify potential bids in which
the School could be a partner, what areas we should aim for, who are the
people we might collaborate with, what other disciplines we could work with.
One possible outcome would be to form a smaller group that could meet
regularly to develop these possibilities. New
Material for RF and Microwave Technologies workshop Biosensing for Health - a HTC-KTN event 28 Nov 14 Event to be held in Leeds. The development of clinically useful biosensors presents many challenges to both the academic and medical fields. Initially it is vitally important to identify appropriate targets for the conditions to be tested. Only then can work on a recognition system, a signal transducer and a signal processing component commence. At this meeting we will bring together, clinical, academic and commercial expertise in all of these areas to develop working consortia that can access appropriate funding to further research in this area. Although the HTC is focused on colorectal disease we wish to draw in expertise in this field from any clinical or academic specialty. Funding

Acceleration Account (IAA) 14

2014 The STFC pilot IAA has funding available to researchers to ‘pump prime’ STFC-funded research outputs for impact creation / commercialisation. As this is a pilot, the continuation of the STFC IAA will, in part, be dependent on demand for such funds. This process will be supported financially by rewards from the pilot Impact Acceleration Account award, which can be used to facilitate knowledge exchange, problem solving or the realisation of opportunities. These could include access to facilities and equipment, consultancy services, or training and short secondments, thus adding significant value to the wider impact agenda. This could also include the use of external supporters who can help in developing and shaping propositions. Projects that may not be immediately or necessarily commercial, but have the potential to create substantial societal impact will also be considered. However, this list is not exhaustive and consideration will be given to any applications, which demonstrate a clear pathway to furthering STFC-funded research. Further support will be available from Dr Alick Deacon – the School of Physics & Astronomy’s Technology Translation Fellow – and UMIP, who can help colleagues with writing plans to secure further funding or develop collaborations to translate research into outputs with commercial or impact potential. the 2015-2016 Faculty for the Future Fellowships 14

Fellowships www.facultyforthefuture.net are aimed at women from
developing and emerging economies to pursue PhD or Post-doctorate studies
in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Grant recipients are
selected as much for their leadership capabilities as for their scientific
talents. Ultimately they are expected to return to their home countries to
continue their academic careers, to further their research, to teach and to
become inspirational role models for other young women, especially in the
STEM fields. Faculty for the Future
grants are based on actual costs for eligible expenses up to a maximum of USD
50k p.a. and may be renewed through to completion of studies subject to performance,
self-evaluation, recommendation from supervisors,

Supranuclear Palsy Association funding 31

2014 Over the years, the PSP Association have funded several £millions worth of research into this rare condition. This year around £500k has been set aside to support research into neurological disorders (particularly those associated with the Protein tau). Progressive
MS Alliance (PMSA) Collaborative Network Award 31 Jan 15 Open: 15 December 2014 Deadline: 31 January 2015 This
new award will create interdisciplinary, global, collaborative networks,
focused on new therapy development, including new and repurposed drugs and/or
other treatment strategies for progressive MS, including the Discovery,
advancement and validation of new or existing, biological or imaging biomarkers. Submissions will
open on 15 December 2014.
Successful applicants will be notified by 1 July 2015. For appropriate applications, potential applicants
may wish to request a letter of support from the UK MS Clinical Trials
