from Head of School
Open Day Success The School had two great open days with nearly 400 visitors, Thank you
to all the staff and students who put on a great event including a really
impressive tech fair where our students showed the wide range of things that
they can do, and spoke to potential applicants and their parents. We also had
banners and some splendid cupcakes to celebrate the School’s 50th
birthday. News and announcements
Seminar
Programme complete for this semester The programme of School seminars is
complete for this semester – take a look at the list of speakers here.
This week’s seminar speaker is Dr Mike
Evans of BBC research speaking on “Researching
User Experience in an IP Broadcasting System” BCS Roger Needham Lecture 2014 19 Nov 14 The 2014 Needham lecture 'Mining biological networks' will be delivered by Dr Natasa Przulj, Imperial College London. The lecture will take place on 19 November 2014 at The Royal Society, 6-9 Carlton House Terrace, London, SW1Y 5AG. We are faced with a flood of molecular data. Various biomolecules interact in a cell to perform biological functions, forming very large networks. The challenge is how to mine these molecular networks to answer fundamental questions, including gaining new insight into aging, diseases, and improving therapeutics. Just as computational approaches for analysing genetic sequence data have revolutionized biological understanding, the expectation is that analyses of biological networks will have similar ground-breaking impacts. Dr Pzulj will explain her research in this field and how her methods apply to other domains. Events
Researching User Experience in an IP Broadcasting System 9 Oct 14 14:00, Atlas suite, Kilburn building Speaker: Dr Mike Evans, BBC. Host: Caroline Jay. 3rd Annual International Women’s Hackathon 11 Oct 14 The International Women’s Hackathon is a network of concurrent events that are designed to empower young women leaders in computer science. By providing a fun and safe environment in which to explore computing, the hackathon encourages and supports university women around the world to become producers of future innovations in technology and help solve challenges in the world today. This year we will be support Environmental NGOs with Climate Change (Nature Conservancy) and Disaster Relief (Direct Relief). Learn more and register your event today at this link. New Material for RF and Microwave Technologies workshop Deadline: 16:00, 23 October 2014 EPSRC invites expressions of interest to attend a workshop in the Birmingham area (venue TBA), to engage with the research communities in the area of RF and Microwave Devices. New
Material for RF and Microwave Technologies workshop mHealth & eHealth Innovation Review 30 Oct 14 10-12:00, Joule Suite, Core Technology
Facility, Grafton St. UMIP undertook a review of the activity and related Intellectual Property in mobile and electronic health (mhealth and ehealth) across the University earlier this summer and Jane Garnett spoke to a sample of the academics active in that field. Having interviewed 30+ academic and support staff across the University most expressed an interest in hearing about the results. This event is an opportunity for Jane to present her findings to the University mHealth community giving an overview of the University’s activity and the grant opportunities, potential markets and potential sources of funding. The academic’s listed will also give a brief presentation on their current research as an example of the work being undertaken. Speakers include: ·
Jane Garnett (JG Technology Management Ltd) “UoM
mHealth & eHealth Innovation Review - including grant opportunities,
markets and sources of funding” ·
Prof. Tariq Aslam (Institute of Human Development )“It’s
Child's Play” ·
Dr Sandra Bucci (School of Psychological Sciences)
“Using mHealth to deliver a psychological intervention for serious mental
health problems” ·
Dr Alex Casson (School of EEE) “Low power mHealth:
neurotechnology and energy harvesting” ·
Prof. Sonja Kotz (School of Psychological Sciences)
