News from the Head of SchoolLondon Mathematical Society Awards 31 Jan 2013 The London Mathematical Society "Scheme 7" grant programme provides small financial awards (max £500) to help support a visit for collaborative research at the interface of Mathematics and Computer Science. See: http://www.lms.ac.uk/grants/computer-science-small-grants-scheme-7 Heidelberg Laureates Forum for young Computer Scientists and Mathematicians ACM have created a new opportunity for young scientists in Computer Science and Mathematics: the Heidelberg Laureates Forum which will provide an opportunity for young researchers to spend a week with winners of the Turing Award, Abel Prize, and Fields Medal. Details can be found at: http://www.heidelberg-laureate-forum.org/ ~100+ young researchers (i.e., recent PhDs, graduate students, and possibly undergraduates with good research experience will be accepted. Competition for places is expected to be serious and to stand the best chance of being accepted young researchers should be nominated by a colleague, professor or mentor who can attest to the quality of their work. Raksha is coming to us from the Research and Enterprise unit at the University of Bolton and has several years of experience in research administration. BBSRC Responsive Mode – guidance changes · Changes in place: 17 Jan 2013 The requirements for all BBSRC Responsive Mode grant applications have been simplified as of 17 Jan 2013. Changes include: 1. The case for support must be contained within a maximum 8 pages 2. A new mandatory attachment type, called 'Data Management Plan', is to be used by applicants to provide information relating to data sharing 3. A new mandatory attachment type, called 'Workplan', is to be used by applicants to provide a diagrammatic workplan for the proposed research 4. Eligibility of Principal and Co-Investigators has been amended to allow researchers from overseas who are moving to the UK to apply ahead of their move 5. Publication costs associated with peer reviewed journal articles and conference papers must not be included in grants as these costs are funded by RCUK APC publication funding 6. Documents containing URLs will no longer be returned for amendment. Gaze Modelling for Time Series Medical Data Caroline Jay, Simon Harper (with Fastbleep) Funding body: Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences Strategic Fund Award amount: £7,538 The GazeMod pilot study will investigate the feasibility of using eye tracking to capture the pattern recognition implicit in the cognitive processes of medical experts viewing ECG outputs, for the development of medical training and diagnostic software.
