News from Head of School

Bin binning schedule

Bins will be removed from offices in the IT building at the end of this week. Please check that there are recycling bins reasonably nearby and contact Eamon if they need relocating or if additional bins are required. Recycling bins will be installed on the second floor of Kilburn on Monday (28th May) with office bins being removed on 9th July.

Research Office moves on 11th June

The Research Office will move to its new home on Monday 11th June. The new office is located in Room 1.135 on the first floor of the Turing building. Email and telephone contact should continue as before, although there will be an interruption to service on the day of the move.

Thefts

There have been a number of thefts from the Kilburn Building. Last week an individual attempted to remove valuables from an office. Please take care not to leave valuables unsecured. If you see anyone acting suspiciously please contact University Security immediately on 0161 306 9966.

Staff loads

You should have received an e-mail with your load for the next academic year 2012/13. If you haven’t received an e-mail or you think that something is incorrect then please speak to your line manager. The staff loads for academic year 2013-14 can be found here:  Staff loads

 

Events

EPSRC Regional Meetings                                                                             Various

EPSRC are holding 3 Regional Meetings during May to highlight progress made against our Delivery Plan and to discuss how we can continue to work together to ensure that we maintain, if not improve, the UK’s relative international research standing in the face of increased competition.

 

Regional Meetings will be held in Newcastle (3rd May), Birmingham (11th May) and London (23rd May) further information regarding timings and registration can be found on our website following the links included above.

Application to Dense Linear Algebra Libraries

Professor Robert van de Geijn will be visiting the UK in June and will deliver the above talk to the Numerical Algorithm and High Performance Computing Network in the School of Mathematics.

14.00, Venue: Frank Adams Seminar Rooms, Alan Turing Building. The talk is open to all but please email Vicki Gallagher to confirm attendance.

 

 

Funding Opportunities

EPSRC additional funding to University                                                   8 Jun 12

EPSRC have allocated additional sponsorship of over £1m to the University to be used strategically to support initiatives in defined areas

1. Pathways to Impact

2. Partial student scholarships

3. Internships for recent graduates

4. Bridging the Gaps/Priming Tranformative Research (seed-corn funding)

Item four, Bridging the Gap, allows only one submission per school. If there's more than one person intending to bid for this pot, then there will have to be some internal selection. So, if you wish to bid for this money email Robert Stevens with your form filled in by 8 June.

Completed application forms should be returned electronically to James Evans (James Evans), with a copy to your School Research Office contact by 18th June 2012.

This call is being issued as part of the "Many-core Architectures and Concurrency in Distributed and Embedded Systems"(MACDES) priority, announced in July 2011 by the ICT Theme. Up to £5m will be committed to this call, subject to the quality of proposals received.
