News from Head of SchoolNext Head of School I am pleased to confirm that Jim Miles is Head of School designate, and will take over from the present incumbent on 1st November. Jim will be well placed to hit the ground running in interactions with the faculty and university, building on his experience as Associated Dean for Graduate Education, and will be participating in various information-gathering activities in the school in the meantime. Hopefully these will not lead him to conclude that things are being passed on to him in a state of complete disarray (!), and we will work together to try to ensure that the transfer of responsibilities is as seamless as possible. Employability Event The university is concerned that its overall employment statistics are less good than those in many other Russell Group universities, and thus is seeking to take actions to ensure both that we are represented fairly in statistics and that we follow good practice in supporting graduates. In this context, an employability event is being run for all staff, with details at: http://www.manchester.ac.uk/careers/employabilityevent Computer Science seems to be doing reasonably well, with 90% in graduate employment (http://unistats.direct.gov.uk) six months after graduating, which is 8th equal nationally among Computer Science returns and 8th equal in the university (below dentistry, medicine, nursing and teacher training, but above almost all disciplines that do have a significant focus on a single employer).
