from Head of School
Open Day Success The School had two great open days with nearly 400 visitors, Thank you
to all the staff and students who put on a great event including a really
impressive tech fair where our students showed the wide range of things that
they can do, and spoke to potential applicants and their parents. We also had
banners and some splendid cupcakes to celebrate the School’s 50th
birthday.

This week’s seminar speaker is Dr Mike
Evans of BBC research speaking on “Researching
User Experience in an IP Broadcasting System” BCS Roger Needham Lecture 2014 19 Nov 14 The 2014 Needham lecture 'Mining biological networks' will be delivered by Dr Natasa Przulj, Imperial College London. The lecture will take place on 19 November 2014 at The Royal Society, 6-9 Carlton House Terrace, London, SW1Y 5AG. We are faced with a flood of molecular data. Various biomolecules interact in a cell to perform biological functions, forming very large networks. The challenge is how to mine these molecular networks to answer fundamental questions, including gaining new insight into aging, diseases, and improving therapeutics. Just as computational approaches for analysing genetic sequence data have revolutionized biological understanding, the expectation is that analyses of biological networks will have similar ground-breaking impacts. Dr Pzulj will explain her research in this field and how her methods apply to other domains. Events

By providing a fun and safe environment in which to explore computing, the hackathon encourages and supports university women around the world to become producers of future innovations in technology and help solve challenges in the world today. Facility, Grafton St. UMIP undertook a review of the activity and related Intellectual Property in mobile and electronic health (mhealth and ehealth) across the University earlier this summer and Jane Garnett spoke to a sample of the academics active in that field. Having interviewed 30+ academic and support staff across the University most expressed an interest in hearing about the results. This event is an opportunity for Jane to present her findings to the University mHealth community giving an overview of the University’s activity and the grant opportunities, potential markets and potential sources of funding. The academic’s listed will also give a brief presentation on their current research as an example of the work being undertaken. Speakers include: ·

Research Council (ESRC) has awarded the University of Manchester over £860k
to deliver the Impact Acceleration Account (IAA) until 2018. The first
