News from Head of School
We are all
monkeys! On Wednesday this week Manchester Computer Science football group went "bananas" to beat racism. Inspired by footballer Dani Alves eating the banana hurled at him on the pitch and joining thousands of people around the world they took this picture during their weekly football match at Sugden sports center. #WeAreAllMonkeys http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/blogs-trending-27191333 http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/27183851 If you can't beat racism, eat it! First year project showcase Our 1st year students put on a great show of their achievements during their first year projects, If you missed it this year, make sure you go along next year to see the original and imaginative work that our students can do.
Annual visit a great success. The 4th Annual Waterfowl Event was a great success with 9 ducklings born this year. While Mrs Duck finds the courtyard the perfect place to lay and hatch eggs, its complete lack of natural water and duck food make it a poor environment to raise her brood. If you are worried about the fate of the family, local charity Animals In Distress collected them last week and relocated them to more natural surroundings in Cheshire. Three BBC
placements awarded to our students! The BBC in Salford Quays offered a total of 7 placements, our MEng students have secured three of them, working on BBC iPlayer! Congratulations to our students and to Duncan, Mabel and everyone else who helped them to secure this opportunity. Graduation Party 14th July Exam time is rapidly approaching, inevitably followed by Graduation Day! This year the School reception will be in the Atlas rooms at 2:30pm with prizegiving at 3:00pm. The ceremony will be at 4:45pm. News and Announcements

Clinical Record Interactive Search (CRIS) to support mental health research 9 May 13:00-14:00, G306b, Jean McFarlane Building (number 92 on the campus map) Speakers: Matthew Broadbent, Richard Jackson, Rob Stewart (NIHR Biomedical Research Centre for Mental Health, King’s College London) Abstract: The speakers will introduce a large epidemiology project known as CRIS (Clinical Record Interactive Search, http://www.slam.nhs.uk/about/core-facilities/cris), which is a pseudonymised version of the EHR system of the South London and Maudsley NHS trust consisting of ~20 mil free text documents (apparently Europe’s largest mental health repository). The project aims to (cross)link CRIS to other datasets such as accident and emergency visits, hospital admissions, local cancer records, Lambeth DataNet, educational/school census data - see http://www.slam.nhs.uk/about/core-facilities/cris/cris-linkages for more details. In particular, the speakers will be explaining natural language processing strategies that are applied to extract structured information from clinical free text. The talk will include three parts: Matthew Broadbent (CRIS Senior Project Manager): “The Clinical Record Interactive Search (CRIS) application for EHR-based research” Richard Jackson (Clinical Informatics Text Mining Lead): “Natural language processing strategies in mental health EHR data” Rob Stewart (BRC Theme Lead, Clinical Informatics): “CRIS and CRIS-NLP applications in mental health research” Funding Opportunities
