News from Head of School
School Christmas Party 15:00 Thurs 19 Dec 13 15:00, School common room Computer Scientists, come on down! Building on last year’s successful party Quizmaster Chris will test your trivia while DJ Jezmas strives heroically to get you dancing! There will be pizza, music, drinks and great company. Please bring along a bottle of something you like. Christmas Closure The Kilburn and IT buildings are closed during the University's Christmas closure period 24th December 2013 - 1st January 2014 inclusive. There will be no heating or ventilation, no cleaning and no emptying of rubbish. There will be no IT technical support and the IT team in the School may take the opportunity to perform maintenance during the Christmas break. As such, there may be brief or extended periods when some services are unavailable. You should not plan to work in Kilburn or IT buildings during the Christmas closure period unless there is a real necessity to do so. Next School Newsletter Mon 14 Jan 14 The staff at The Newsletter will be taking an all-expenses unpaid break over Christmas. Any significant news will get to you by some other route. Social Media Workshop 9th, 20th Jan 14 Manchester Informatics are organising two workshops to discuss the development of Manchester's bid for an ESRC funded International Centre for Social Media Research. To feed into this they are hosting 2 workshops in scoping out current activities/interests in social media. See here for more details. Announcements and news
Horizon2020 – call for experts Ahead of the start of H2020, the European Commission is calling for independent experts to evaluate proposals for EU funding and for other activities such as monitoring, programme evaluation and policy development. There’s a particular need for evaluators with interest in research with higher Technology Readiness Levels (TRL). This is a great opportunity to get to understand more about the EC process. Interested candidates are invited to apply as soon as possible in preparation for the first project proposal evaluations, which will start in 2014. Please let Sarah Chatwin know if you apply. talks about SpiNNaker and its role in the Human Brain Project, including a

Mobile = low power? A journey to the low end 18 Dec 13 APT Seminar Dr Greg Wright Qualcomm Research 12:00, 2.15, Kilburn building Computationally Intensive Research (CIR) 18 Dec 13 12:30 – refreshments 13-14:00 – forum 6.207, University Place Professor Chris Taylor (Manchester Informatics) and Mr Ian Cottam (IT Services) are holding a forum for academics interested in computationally intensive research. CIR incorporates High Performance Computing, High Throughput Computing, Visualisation, Big Data processing, etc. Discussion will involve what is available currently (locally and externally) and under what rules of engagement. Options for having a more unified strategy will be discussed and we would like your views. If you can't make this lunchtime meeting, there will be further opportunities (some via surveys) early in the new year. No booking required, just drop in. How can it be that so many clever, competent and capable people can feel that they are just one step away from being expose as a complete fraud? Despite evidence that they are performing well they can still have that lurking fear that at any moment someone is going to tap them on the shoulder and say “We need to have a chat”. Perhaps it will be the next presentation they have to make, or that paper or report they have to write or that interview they are going for. That’s when they will find out and then it’s Game Over.
Hugh Kearns has worked with thousands of high performing imposters, he is one himself and is currently writing a book on the topic. Hugh is a currently a visitor in Manchester but he leaves at the end of Jan! Come along and hear what the latest psychological research has to tell us about The Imposter Syndrome and more importantly some strategies for dealing with it. Funding Opportunities

Whole system design for energy efficient high
performance computing 17

improve the energy constraints required to power and cool new supercomputers.
The
goal of this Pre Commercial Procurement (PCP)
with PRACE is to procure R&D services that result in highly
energy efficient HPC system components that are integrated into an HPC
architecture which is capable of providing a floating-point peak performance
of up to 100 PFlop/s. This pilot PCP is for 40
months, consisting of 3 phases: ·
Phase I (solution
design): 6 months, 5 contractors with €180k (excl VAT) per bid ·
Phase II
(prototype development): for successful Phase I projects. 10 months, 3
contractors with ~€2.7m (excl VAT) available in total ·
Phase III
(Pre-commercial small scale product/service development): for successful

the EPSRC have launched a call for fundamental research
in non-invasive sensing and imaging for the diagnosis and measurement
of Dementias. £5m is available for 3-5 projects. Registration

Scrapping: How Companies can use 'Big-Data' generated by Facebook?". Watch the video.
Somdip’s presentation even caught the attention of a representative from the
