The award of studentships will now be made to the University rather than to individual Faculties. A cross-Faculty BBSRC Doctoral Training Programme (DTP) Board, directed by Nick Turner (Chemistry) will administer the studentships. The call for project proposals for studentships to start September 2012 will be circulated imminently. All staff working within the BBSRC remit are encouraged to participate in the project proposal process. In order to explain the new BBSRC DTP, the cross-Faculty recruitment process, and address questions relating to how to prepare project bids for these studentships, two open meetings are planned. Hopefully you will be able to attend one of these meetings: Meeting 1: Wednesday 21st September 2011, 1.00pm Roscoe LTB Meeting 2: Wednesday 28th September 2011, 2.00pm Roscoe LTB Ray Boot-Handford (Faculty of Life Sciences) Deputy Director of DTP Board (with responsibility for Recruitment) Call for Nominations: 2011 Best PGR Student Paper Prizes 30 Sept 11Dear all, Each year at the PGR Symposium, prizes are awarded for the best PhD thesis examined, and the best student paper published, in the previous year. This year the Symposium is running from the 1st to the 3rd November. This message is to request nominations of papers by PhD students for the 2011 prizes. Nominations need to be sent to Jonathan Shapiro by Friday 30th September, which is just over 3 weeks from today. Thus, if you are: 1. A student who has published a good paper during the last 12months or so, please encourage your supervisor to put it forward for the best paper prize. 2. A supervisor one or more of whose students published a good paper during the last 12 months or so, please encourage your supervisor to put it forward for the prizes. 3. A research group leader, please ensure that one or more good papers published by research students in your group are put forward for the prizes. More details relating to the prizes (including rules for entry) are available Here Students, please note that it is the prerogative of your supervisor to nominate your paper but feel free to make a case to her/him if you believe you have one. Supervisors, please note in the above web page the need to provide supporting material for the nomination. The deadline for submission to Jonathan Shapiro is Friday 30th September 2011. This is a HARD deadline as the Symposium will take place four weeks after and the awarding committee needs time to consider all the evidence and reach a decision. I will send a reminder in a week's time. Please feel free to email Josh Knowles or Jon Shapiro if you need any clarification. confirmation and clearing, our attention is turning to the upcoming
Undergraduate Open Day, scheduled for Saturday October 8th.The October
Open Day is the key recruitment event in the 2011/12 calendar and an
opportunity to speak directly to students considering joining undergraduate
programmes in September 2012. The day is all the more important given that these
students will be the first to pay higher level tuition fees. In order to make
the day a success we are in need of a number of volunteers to give talks, run
demos, chat to prospective students and their parents, and generally help us
present the School as a welcoming and vibrant place to study. The activities
that we run as part of the Open Day have been scheduled as follows: 11:30 - 12:00:

Day in June we ran Toby's augmented reality demo in the Schuster building. It
was extremely well received. We plan to repeat this, but would also like to
run some other demos here in the School. As such, we're keen to hear from
staff and students who have something interesting to showcase. If you are
willing to provide a demo, or to help out with any of the activities above,
please let us know. Thanks Bernard LMS Computer Science Colloquium 11 Oct 11The aims of the meeting are to showcase state of the art scientific computing applications, to identify some of the challenges posed by next generation high performance machines and indicate promising approaches to tackling the problem.
