Christmas Party

The School Christmas party will take place on Wednesday 16th December starting at 4pm in the Staff Common Room. There will be a DJ and pizzas. All staff and postgraduate research students are invited. Please bring a bottle.

New Masters Programmes Launched

The new web site publicising the school’s much revised masters offerings for 2010/11 is now online at:  http://www.cs.manchester.ac.uk/postgraduate/.  The site describes the new programmes, pathways and themes, and includes, among other things, video testimonials from previous students.  I am grateful for the significant effort that many people (coordinated by Uli Sattler) have but into designing the new programmes. The web site also seems likely to stand out from the crowd; Rina carried out much of the site design, with some pages generated from one of Iain’s databases.

Graduation ceremony                                                                                  16 Dec 09

The CS graduation ceremony is being held on Wednesday 16 December at 14:30.  If you have supervised an MSc dissertation for the 08/09 cohort or a PhD student who has been awarded their degree since July 09, you are very welcome to attend the ceremony as part of the platform party.

There will be a pre-graduation reception in School for the Graduands from 12:00-14:00 in the Atlas Suite.

Manchester Win Again!

Once again a team from Manchester CS has carried off the first prize at the annual Quiz tournament organised in London by UBS. The team, rejoicing in the name  'We Just Lost the Game', consisted of Lewis Tuff,  Luke Torjussen,  Ben Cope, Adam Burton, Dan Kerry and Tom Cass.

After winning the hotly contested heat held in Manchester the team went on to win the final comfortably against teams from other universities such as Imperial and UCL.  Before the quiz, UBS gave them a guided tour of their offices to give an insight into the company structure and job possibilities.

Each member of the team won a Wii Games console and made some useful contacts in UBS. The trophy will be on display on the Lower First as soon as it gets back from the engravers.

Postgraduate Open Afternoon

On Wednesday 25th November the School hosted a Postgraduate Open Afternoon. The event ran from 2.00pm - 4.30pm and was organised by Jez Lloyd and Sue Wolfenden from the External Affairs Office.

There was a presentation of Taught MSc and MPhil/PhD programmes by Uli Sattler, followed by an overview of the Advanced Computer Science programme themes presented by Kung-Kiu Lau, Ning Zhang and Bijan Parsia. The afternoon concluded with an academic staff Meet and Greet attended by Renate Schmidt, Thierry Scheurer and Tom Thomson.

There were 30 attendees (16 from Manchester, the rest from Liverpool, Salford, Wales, Bolton, York etc). Of those 30, 23 were interested in MSc courses and 7 in research.

Many thanks to all those who participated and also to Jez and Sue for their superb organisation.
