News from Head of

CS-Informatics Review
There was an important development last week in
the implementation of the CS-Informatics Review. The Dean of
Humanities wrote last Friday to staff in the School of Informatics to inform them that, following
further discussion, it had been agreed that those staff in Informatics not
transferring to CS would transfer to Manchester Business School, rather than remaining as a
separate School. The transfer will map research groups in
Informatics onto existing research groupings in MBS, with the aim of
minimising disruption on both sides. In making this announcement the
Dean emphasised the strong commitment of the Faculty of Humanities to the
creation of a pan-University Centre for Informatics. MBS will play a prominent role in the Centre, involving
both its existing IS staff, and those transferring in from
Informatics. Overall, I believe that this is a positive development
which will contribute to creating a sustainable future for broadly-based
Informatics activity in Manchester.
Media Success
The School’s research has figured prominently in
the news over the past week. Steve Furber’s million pound grant was
one of the top
stories on BBC on-line, and Steve was interviewed on GMR. The
story was also covered in several press articles and got second billing in
the monthly announcement emailed to all University staff. The
virtual reality experiment conducted by Toby Howard and his group also
appeared on BBC on-line and was picked up by news services around the
world, in Canada, Australia, the US and China, resulting a listing on
Google News as one of the top three science and technology stories of the
day. Many thanks to all those involved in gaining this exposure for
the School.
