News from Head of School

Chair in Computational Systems Biology

Professor Roland Eils, who is a possible high-profile candidate for the EPSRC-funded chair in Computational Systems Biology, will be visiting the School on Friday 2nd December.   He will present a seminar at 1030 (see details below), which I encourage as many of you as possible to attend.  We have also arranged a programme of meetings with interested staff. Professor Eils will also meet with staff in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering & Analytical Science, and the Faculty of Life Sciences, with the VP for Research, and the Deans of EPS and FLS. Another research star, who may be interested in joining us, will be visiting in either late December or early January.

External Review of CS and Informatics

Following on from the report of the external review panel, the Deans of EPS and Humanities are establishing an Implementation Group with representatives from CS, Informatics, MBS, and other relevant Schools in the Faculty of Humanities. I will represent CS with Roger Hubbold deputising where appropriate.  The group is required to report by the end of February 2006, but the aim is to fast-track an agreement on realignment of degree programmes by early January, in time to meet the UCAS deadline for details of programmes for 2007 entry.  The fact that the two Schools currently offer competing programmes in computing is clearly damaging and, given the current state of admissions, needs to be addressed at the earliest opportunity.  It will be challenging to reach agreement with Informatics and take the opportunity to revise our own offerings in the short time available, but I believe it is important that we try.

Sabbatical Leave

This is the time of year when we seek applications for sabbatical leave.  Sabbaticals are an important mechanism for renewing the research potential of the School and, though visits abroad, increasing the international visibility of both the School and the individual.  Given its importance, we have set ourselves the target achieving a significant increase in the proportion of staff on sabbatical at any time.  I strongly encourage all of you to think seriously about taking this opportunity to strengthen your research (or teaching).  Although we encourage staff on sabbatical to spend time out of the country and certainly away from their normal environment, the scheme is flexible, and serious consideration will be given to any well thought-out plan for personal development.  More details will be circulated by email this week.  The deadline for applications is 6th January 2006, and you will need to have discussed your plans with your line manager before then.

Constructive Mathematics Day New                                                            9 Dec 05

The meeting, which will consist of some invited lectures in the general area of constructive mathematics and its foundations, has been arranged at rather short notice – sparked by the fact that both Nicola Gambino will be visiting Manchester from Montreal (with MIMS funding) and Peter Schuster will be on a visit from Munich (as a PhD external examiner).  In addition we are pleased that Michael Rathjen (Leeds), Giovanni Sambin (Padua) and Steve Vickers (Birmingham) have also agreed to give talks.  This was made possible by the support of MIMS and the School of CS.

University of Manchester-IBM Partners Programme                            12 Dec 05

Partners will be working in areas of overlapping strategic importance to both organisations and through partnership will work together to achieve organisational goals. They will be supported to spend time interacting with each other and developing and promulgating an understanding of each organisation thereby identifying substantive areas of activity. The programme will also act as an enabler in developing the IBM-UoM relationship and the understanding between the organisations and will contribute to the Partners’ personal development.

BBSRC International Scientific Interchange Scheme (ISIS)

BBSRC's International Scientific Interchange Scheme (ISIS) provides support to help scientists make and establish new contacts with their international counterparts. Funding is available to BBSRC grantholders, and researchers working on BBSRC-supported projects at BBSRC-sponsored Institutes for travel and subsistence for three main types of visit. The scheme is open to bids at any time (at least 6 weeks before travel) with payments being made in advance of any visits. Please note BBSRC-supported students are not eligible to travel under ISIS support.

BBSRC Industry Interchange Programme                                              16 Dec 05

The movement of people is considered one of the best forms of knowledge transfer and there is potentially great benefit to the UK economy and society from supporting such opportunities. BBSRC is piloting the Industry Interchange Programme to support the short-term exchange, in either direction, of researchers between the science base and industry. The objective of the Programme is to support Interchanges that provide strategic advantage to the UK science base and industry arising from reciprocal access to facilities, expertise and/or knowledge, and an increased understanding of scientific issues of common concern.
